The Importance of Oil Changes

Ever wonder how important it really is to get your oil changed regularly?

IT’S REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT.

In fact, getting regular oil changes is one of the easiest and cheapest ways that you can avoid big repair bills down the road.

So what’s the big deal? In short, your engine has many metal parts that slide past each other at a high rate of speed and frequency every time you drive. Your oil is what keeps those parts lubricated, and reduces wear, tear, and friction on those parts. By not changing the oil, you risk your oil levels either dropping dangerously low, or – more likely – your dirty oil becoming “sludge” which can create clogs in the oil tank and prevent the oil from doing its job. Eventually, the engine may get too hot causing metal parts to melt and the engine to seize. In this case, the engine will likely be unsalvageable and will need to be replaced entirely.

It’s often said that oil changes are recommended every 5,000 kilometers (3,000 miles) or every three months. We suggest checking your owner’s manual for the recommended oil change intervals, however, as every vehicle is different. When in doubt, defer to the odometer rather than the calendar, as it is the actual driving that has the most impact on your engine oil, not the passage of time.

And finally, having routine maintenance done also ensures that any other potentially expensive or dangerous problems your vehicle has may get noticed earlier. Wherever you go for your oil changes, ensure that they include multi-point inspections (many of the quickie places do not).
