A Closer Look at Torque Converters

As a follow up to our post about the difference between Manual and Automatic transmissions, here is a closer look at one of the most important parts of an automatic transmission: the torque converter.

Just like manual transmissions, automatic transmissions require the ability to let the engine turn while the wheels and gears in the transmission come to a stop. While vehicles with manual transmission cars use a clutch, however, automatic vehicles use a torque converter. The torque converter is located at the front of the transmission where it connects to the engine, and is essentially the middle man between the transmission and the engine.

The Torque Converter is comprised of a pump, turbine, stator and transmission fluid; crucial components which combine to allow the engine to spin independently of the transmission.

Servicing your torque converter is extremely important to ensure a smooth functioning vehicle, and to avoid big repair bills down the road. This servicing is included as part of a routine automatic transmission service, which is recommended regularly for all types of transmissions.
